PROPOSED OLF WILL THREATEN MILITARY PILOTS, FARMERS, HOMEOWNERS, AND WILDLIFE

Concerned citizens of the United States of America, have formed a coalition to halt the OLF in North Carolina's Albemarle Peninsula. The Navy plans to build an unnecessary OLF (Outlying Landing Field) in the heart of the Atlantic Flyway.

December 7, 2005 the Navy executed nine flyover passes near the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, at the Washington County proposed OLF site. A video shot during the flights recorded the birds desperately trying to get away from the Super Hornet in flight to their feeding grounds. Ten miles away from the proposed landing field, in Pinetown (Beaufort Co.) there are reports that the wildlife was extremely agitated. There was extreme squawking and fluttering in the trees and on the ground.

December 8, 2005 the Navy attempted to execute a flyover at the Mattamuskeet, Hyde County proposed site. After one-pass, eyewitnesses reported the plane almost went down and the wildlife was greatly disturbed.

Now is the time to tell all our state and federal representatives to stop the OLF before it is too late. These two incidents blatantly expose the truth that the last pristine environment on the east coast is about to be destroyed, Due to the extreme danger of a jet crash, our officials are allowing their constituents to live in a danger zone.

Phone calls and/or letters are advocated to our elected officials to fight this tragedy. Letters to DC take a long time to reach an office, due to security. Faxes are more expedient. Emails are easy to delete, and can be overlooked. Request a return reply when faxing, writing, or emailing.

What Can I Do To Help:

* Letters to the Editors
* Call Elected Officials

Suggestion: print out the contact list. Print a list for yourself, and extra ones for people who would be willing to make calls. Start at the top of the list and make one phone call a day, check off the name, the next day call the next person on the list. Check the names off each day, it should only take 1 minute to place the call. When you have finished the list, repeat. This action will send a strong message to our representatives that we want this OLF resolved and we are not going away. Our elected officials could potentially receive hundreds of phone calls a day.

     o White House
     o Secretary of Defense
     o Sen. Dole
     o Sen. Burr

* Fax or send written letters to officials (emails are the easiest to delete
   and receive the least amount of attention)
* Form a NO-OLF chapter in your county if you do not have one.
   We currently have ten.
* Attend meetings and events
* Tell others
* Contact NO-OLF about a Window Sticker/Yard Sign/Shirt/ Hat

Points of topic:

One of the largest Eminent Domain acquisitions in military history
Danger to:
     o Navy pilots
     o Wildlife, disturbance of habitat
     o People living on the region

Destruction of:
     o Albemarle Peninsula
     o Some of the most fertile farmland in the country
     o America's generational farmer

The Navy's studies downplayed the substantial risk of collisions between jets and the huge flocks of large migratory birds that winter in the area, and minimized adverse impacts to a globally significant wildlife refuge. The International Migratory Bird Treaty protects these birds.
The OLF will displace farming families dating back several generations and homeowners. We encourage the Navy to pursue an OLF in a manner and location which satisfies the goals set forth in the BRAC process, namely efficiency, cost reduction, and cooperative training.

Thank you for helping to protect the Albemarle Peninsula, the safety of our military pilots and the people who live in the region.

Gates: Cancel Navy flyover - Camden may send Navy similar request
Gates County commissioners have formally asked the U.S. Navy to drop its plans for a fighter-jet flyover, saying they don't know what purpose the demonstration would serve.
Landing field aids security
I would like to once again relay to the public why the Navy requires an additional outlying landing field, or OLF, to support field carrier-landing practice and why this new facility is vital to our national security.
